Aurora, CO – Deadly Crash After Driver Runs Red Light at Jewell Ave & Peoria St

Aurora, CO (November 17, 2025) – A man was killed on Friday, November 14, after another driver ran a red light at Jewell Ave and Peoria St, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Police say the crash happened overnight when 41-year-old Cornelius Thomas of Aurora was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe east on Jewell Avenue. Thomas allegedly sped through a red light at the Peoria Street intersection and collided with a Chevrolet Cruze traveling north.

The driver of the Cruze, a 28-year-old man, died at the scene. He was the only person inside the vehicle.

Thomas and his female passenger were both taken to a local hospital to treat their injuries, officials said. After receiving medical care, officers arrested Thomas and booked him into the Aurora Detention Center. He now faces charges of vehicular homicide.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim. Investigators continue to gather evidence and review the events that led to the deadly collision.

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones affected by this devastating loss.

Fatal Car Accidents in Aurora

Fatal car accidents remain a major concern in Aurora, particularly those caused by red-light violations and speeding. Intersections like Jewell Ave and Peoria St are known for steady traffic volume, frequent light changes, and high-speed travel. When a driver runs a red light, the impact often occurs at full force, giving the victim little or no time to react. These T-bone or high-speed collisions are among the deadliest types of crashes in urban areas.

Colorado traffic safety data shows a concerning rise in intersection-related fatalities over the past decade. Reckless driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving, continue to contribute to deadly collisions. Even when emergency crews respond quickly, crash victims may suffer traumatic brain injuries, internal bleeding, spinal cord injuries, or fatal blunt-force trauma.

In cases where the at-fault driver is charged with a crime, as seen in this Aurora crash, civil claims may proceed at the same time as criminal prosecution. A wrongful death claim allows families to seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills, lost future earnings, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship.

Experienced attorneys can gather vital evidence, including crash data, witness statements, and any available video footage. They also work with accident reconstruction experts to show how the crash unfolded and who is liable.

Insurance companies may try to settle quickly or minimize payouts, especially when the facts strongly point to driver negligence. Having legal representation ensures the family is not taken advantage of and receives fair compensation that reflects the long-term impact of their loss.
