How Insurance Coverage Works After Highway Injuries in Aurora, CO
Colorado is an at-fault insurance state, which means the driver who caused an accident, and that driver’s liability insurer, are generally responsible for paying for the harm. Drivers must carry liability coverage, but the required minimums are modest compared with the cost of a serious injury. When medical bills and lost wages climb past a policy limit, the gap can become the main financial problem.
Two other coverages can matter when that happens. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which Colorado insurers generally must offer, can apply when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.
Medical payments coverage, also generally offered, can help with early medical bills regardless of fault, although policyholders can reject either coverage in writing.
Claims usually get complicated when policies are read for the first time, and insurers may ask for a recorded statement before a person knows the full extent of the harm. On busy routes, drivers from many places share the road, so the other party’s coverage can vary widely. It can be useful to have a car accident lawyer review each policy that may apply, along with the medical records, to help clarify what coverage exists and what steps come next.
