Centennial, CO (October 22, 2025) – Two women tragically lost their lives Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing East Smoky Hill Road near South Waco Street in Centennial. According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 10 p.m., and it is believed the women were on their way to a nearby bus stop.
Authorities reported that the women were crossing from south to north when they were hit by a westbound vehicle. One of the women died instantly at the scene. The second was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver involved remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. The individual has since been released pending possible charges.
Investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The intersection where the collision occurred lacks a traffic signal and is reportedly very dark, making visibility a significant concern. Residents have described the area as hazardous, with some actively trying to avoid the location due to safety concerns.
Police and first responders arrived quickly at the scene, securing the area and documenting evidence. Officers continue to gather witness statements and review any available footage to better understand the events leading to this tragic incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and hope they find comfort during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety and Accidents in Centennial
Pedestrian fatalities remain a serious concern in Centennial and across Colorado. Intersections without traffic signals, poor lighting, and high-speed roadways contribute to the risk of serious or fatal accidents. According to state traffic data, pedestrian-related deaths have steadily increased in recent years, particularly in areas with heavy vehicle traffic and limited visibility at night.
Safety measures for both drivers and pedestrians are essential to reducing accidents. Drivers should remain alert, especially at night, slow down near known crossing areas, and watch for pedestrians in poorly lit or uncontrolled intersections. Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks whenever possible, wear reflective clothing during low-light conditions, and stay aware of approaching traffic.
Pedestrian accidents often occur due to driver inattention, failure to yield, or environmental hazards, such as poorly lit streets or crosswalks without signals. Even when pedestrians exercise caution, high-speed collisions with vehicles can result in catastrophic injuries or death. Victims and their families often face not only the emotional trauma of a sudden loss but also financial burdens, including medical bills, funeral costs, and potential loss of income.
Legal guidance can be critical in pedestrian fatality cases. An experienced wrongful death attorney in Arapahoe County can help families navigate the complexities of the claims, collect evidence, and pursue compensation from responsible parties. This may include coverage for medical expenses, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and other financial losses. Early legal intervention ensures that all critical details are preserved and that victims’ families have access to the resources they need.
